Ladies and gentlemen, hello. I'm Matt, and I've just started using MLK. I wanted to use the MLK servers, so I tried that. When that didn't work, I tried to use my own server. Neither method worked.

I've only got a test email address in the mailing list now. So far, it's just not working.

Anyway, I still want to use the MLK server. I've uploaded the video of what happens to Youtube, so if anyone wants to take a look and give me a hand figuring this out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Matt

What I'm Running

* Running Windows XP Media Centre Edition
* Norton Internet Security 2006 (Firewall off)
* Windows Firewall
* Linksys WRT54G V8 Router

What I've done since your email

* Turned off NIS, Windows Firewall simultaneously.
* Went into Router config area and turned off whatever blocking I could (not sure if I did the right ones)
* Added Maillist King to Exceptions list on Windows Firewall

I did some reading on Windows Firewall, and from what I've read, it doesn't block outgoing traffic on any ports. I might be wrong on this.

It hasn't worked so far. I'm sure there are loads of things I haven't thought to try, though.

Hi Matt

Do a test sending to around ten recipients and then have a look at your logs, or send one to us for analysis. To do this:

Run MLK and click Ctrl+Shift+I. Choose the option to display your database folder and then browse to the folder "SendLogs"

In that folder your log files are named "mail_sent_*.txt" with the date of the delivery included in the name.

Given what I'm seeing in the video you posted, i would expect you will find that all messages fail with a similar error, most like 10060 (time out).

So that means MLK is being blocked from reaching the destination servers.

Usually this is because port 51 and 25 (outgoing) need to be opened on the firewall, but it appears you've tested that.

However you don't appear to have checked an important one, does your ISP block port 25?

Nigel,

All of the errors are (10004).

Here is the link to my ISP (Bellsouth)'s FAQ on the subject. It seems they do filter port 25. That is extremely annoying.

http://help.bellsouth.net/bellsouth/asp/contentview.asp?sprt_cid=d00c5ac8%2Debd0%2D4216%2Da6e2%2Dbc5ac6de7fc8#What%20if%20I%20have%20a%20Web-based%20email%20account%20 Hotmail/Yahoo!

I've been doing some reading on SMTP blocking, and it seems that Earthlink do it as well as Bellsouth. This means I'm fast running out of available providers.

http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=4015

List of ISPs that block port 25.

Any idea what's the solution here?

Thanks and regards,
Matt

Hi Matt

If they block port 25 then you can't use a local mail server (there is no way around that, which is why they block it).

Your options are to contact your ISP, explain your situation and they may unblock it for you (it may sound like a long shot but our ISP here, Xtra, unblocked us when we requested it), or you may need to upgrade to a "business" account to get it unblocked.

You can also sign up with an SMTP service that uses a different port, such as AuthSMTP or Gmail.

Hi Nigel.

Auth SMTP costs quite a lot, and Gmail seems to send with the reply-to email address "@gmail.com" only.

Bellsouth lets me send via their servers with my own reply address, but I'm pretty sure that if I send 8000 emails through their server, they are going to disconnect me.

Doesn't Xequte offer a service that uses a port other than 25?

Regards,
Matt

Hi Matt

We don't offer any SMTP services, i'm afraid, only the SMTP server built into MLK (which, by nature, communicates with other servers over port 25).

Okay, well I'm now using Bellsouth's Authenticated SMTP service and crossing my fingers that they don't moan!

Thanks for all of the help, Nigel.
