Hi,
I am trying to send the following newsletter but it keeps failing Spamassasin. How do I avaoid this?

It should give you more information than that, such as what aspects of your message triggered the spam blocking.

I have sent the exact email that is triggering the SPAM via our ISP's SMTP server to sitesell.com and it passed their tests with flying colours. In view of this, I can only guess that the problem I am having is with the headers generated by MailList King.
I sent the following email via the Outlook option and as you can see it didn't trigger Spamassassin. [Unfortunately this is not an option for us for several reasons. As an aside though, I note that our newsletter's images are shown as attachements in SmarterMail and viewed in Firebird but appear fine in Outlook!!]

After searching the net and reading the appropriate RFC, it seems to me that of the three differences shown above, the :Sender field seems to be the likely cause of the problem (and perhaps some over-zealous configuring of Spamassassin).
Is it possible to suppress the ':Sender' header so I can do some more testing?

My responses (numbered to make it easier for me  ):
1. The issue regarding images showing attachments is now fixed. You should download v7.05
2. The sender field is in both headers (and is required). The main differences are that Outlook identifies itself clearly as such:
X-Mailer: Microsoft Office Outlook, Build 11.0.5510
vs.
X-Mailer: MailList King 7.0.3.227
Whereas MLK is not a standard email client.
You should test changing the X-Mailer under View>Options, Sending, Other Sending Settings
Also details such as the following may be used to identify software that is used for sending lots of email:

vs.

3. Did you try sending sitesell directly from MLK. If so what was the report?
When I test MLK's main SMTP engine against Spam Assassin it returns a very reasonable 0.4 (5.0 is the usual Spam cut off).

I haven't refered to the X- fields because I thought these were not mandatory and can be so easily spoofed as far as Spammers are concerned. They seem to me to be useless for such purposes.
Having said that, I have tried using yours, Outlooks and none. None of these removed my email flagging as SPAM.

Is this a code generated by a specific software package and is constant in it's signature or form for each software package. I ask because if it is then I don't see it as being a reliable method of detecting SPAM (see the X- Headers above).
I appreciate these items could be used to add into a scoring system and possibly receive extra ratings as per a blacklist etc but surely MLK doesn't fall into that category. After all, Outlook could just as easily be used as the outbound mailer for SPAM could it not?

I'll test that out and let you know how I go.
In my previous post I mentioned the inclusion by MLK of the 'Sender:' header which was absent from the Outlook generated email. Is it possible that the presence of this apparently supurfulous header combined with other factors in my email (they add up to about 1.5 according to sitesell) is triggering the SPAM detection?

I also sent a plain text message to a couple of clients via MLK/SMTP and there were no SPAM triggers activated.
I'm testing MLK from my contract's premises and have no licence here. My own licence is obviously mine and I guess I'd better upgrade to 7.05 before I use MLK again.
Is 7.05 available from your website yet - as a normal unregistered download?
My SPAM problems seem to be related to HTML/Images and before I spend any more time on this I think I should see if 7.05 fixes the issue.

1. What version are you using? If it is already v7.* you will get an email about v7.05 on Friday.
Otherwise you can complete the form at:
www.xequte.com/support/serial/
2. X-Fields are not compulsory. You can even have your X-Mailer blank as Gmail does
3. Known MIME Boundary from common spamming tools can trigger Spam Assassin rules. I confirmed yesterday that this did not occur with MLK's boundaries
4. Sender field is NOT absent in the Outlook fields. Check again
5. 1.5 is perfectly fine as a Spam score. It is way under the the common detection level (4.5 - 5.0)
At any rate, 0.7 of that is easily fixed. I suspect you used an external HTML editor to create your message and it did not insert a valid title, thus you got:
(0.7 points) BODY: HTML title contains "Untitled"
MLK will never create a "Untitled" Title, so if you use an external editor make sure you check that your Title matches your message subject.
The other aspects are common with HTML messages. If you create the message in MLK itself, the HTML rating will probably be a little lower because MLK uses the same HTML editor as Outlook and Outlook Express. But as the HTML rating is only 0.8 it is not a concern.

It seems we have no way of knowing why our html formatted newsletter sent via MLK/ISP-smtp and using version 7.02 trial version has failed Spamassassin tests on at least two differing well used smtp mail servers.
It seems a shame that there are apparently no publicly accessible smtp servers that I can send the offending email to and have Spamassassin append it's reasons for failure via X-Headers.
I will wait for Version 7.05 to be released, both as a trial version and registered version.

Spam blocking software by nature does not want senders to know why they failed a message, otherwise spammers would just tweak their message to evade detection.
You need to know a company that uses Spam Assassin, then when your mail is blocked, ask someone on the inside for details on the failure (the admin will have access to the rule failure breakdown).
As long as you are not using a local mail server (such as MLK's internal server) then you are no more likely to have your mail flagged as Spam as with any other sending app.

I would normally agree with you however anybody can setup a mail server and spamassassin on their own internal lan and carry out the tests required. I also doubt very much whether the trigger that is causing my problem has really been customized to any great extent. I would most likely suspect that there is a trigger for malformed images that some aggressive sysops have chosen to implement in persuit of nothing more than a fantasy that they are in fact one step in front of the spammers. I am confident that any professional spammer has already such a setup which they probaly have automated and use many times a day to tweak their spam. I know I would if I was a spammer.
I have spent many hours already on this and cannot spend any more time in setting up the software and carrying out the tests myself when all indications are that the problem is related to MLK version 7.02 and has most likely already been fixed in 7.05 . The people I am contracted to have already asked me to look elsewhere for a replacement for MLK however at this time I have convinced them that they should wait.

Good news - the SPAM problem appears to have been resolved.
It seems we still have some problems with Outlook on our internal lan as Outlook is putting the email in the Spam folder but there doesn't appear to be any reason for this. There is nothing in the headers from Spamassassin at all.
