DVD PixPlay version 3.35.
Video clips from my Canon digital camera are in AVI format. After editing these clips using Windows Movie Maker, and saving them as DV-AVI (NTSC), PixPlay no longer seems to recognize them. This is the only option in Movie Maker that uses an AVI extension. Am I missing something here? Is there another way to edit those AVI clips in a way that PixPlay can recognize?

Hi Jim

DV-AVI is the correct format. I just did a test with Movie Maker and DVD PixPlay converted it to a DVD correctly (though there wasn't a driver on the test box to preview the video).

What error do you encounter?

The converted AVI file will play in Windows Media Player, but will not display in DVD PixPlay. Do I need a special driver? And, if so, where do I find that?
Thanks -

Nigel will have to explain why it does not work in DVD Pixplay.

AVIcodec is a program that will analyze the video file and tell you which codecs are needed, and which ones you are missing. THEN, it will give you the link to the site where the codec is located, if you are in fact missing that particular one (click “web” button).

Thanks Jim,

That's a useful utility.

For previewing of video and audio files DVD PixPlay uses the Windows drivers. It saves us from having to ship libraries to playback the myriad formats. Occasionally though you will get errors if you are lacking a necessary driver (for the record, Windows Media Player usually does not use Windows drivers for playback).

Jim & Nigel -
I appreciate your help on this, but I still have a long way to go. First off, when I loaded 5 small avi clips from my camera into Movie Maker in order to splice them together - the resulting file was 5meg as a .wmv, but when saved as an .avi file, it was a whopping 448meg. I then checked out a few Converter programs and found they convert the .wmv file to a reasonable 9meg as an .avi and IT WORKS in PixPlay. Trouble is, these are costly programs for the little use I plan to give them and will see if I can find a shareware or at least a more reasonably priced conversion program for video formats.
Thanks again for your excellent support and help on this.
Sincerely,
Jim Archibald

Again, I thank you for your excellent and rapid support.
DVD Pixplay is a great program on its own, but with the added support I have experienced since starting to use the software - I can see no reason to look elsewhere.
Sincerely,

Hi, I think the above problem applies to me as well, but I am not that computer literate and have no idea what the solution offered was! I have a Sony camcorder and am using Windows Movie Maker to capture video. PixPlay only shows the first frame, not the entire video. How do I convert, what tools do I need to migrate the video from Movie Maker to PixPlay? Also, I want to burn to DVD and/or VCD, what setting should I be using in Movie Maker (the settings recommended for computer or tape)? When selecting the settings for tape, it creates humongous 20GB files.

Hi

You shouldn't need to convert files from Movie Maker to use them in DVD PixPlay.

The process for using Movie Maker with PixPlay is described at:

Help. I downloaded my PixPlay today. Where do I find the version? I am trying out a starter album, including 3 video clips directly from my Canon camera, .AVI files. When I try to preview them I get "Cannot find vids: mjpg decompressor" What's that?

Hi Neil

Your AVI videos are in Mjpeg format, so you will need to download an MJpeg codec to preview the slideshow (NOTE: The codec is not required to burn the slideshow to disk. It is only used when previewing).

Some popular commercial ones can be obtained from:

http://www.mainconcept.com/codecs.shtml
http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/technicalsV3.htm
http://www.pegasusimaging.com/picvideomjpeg.htm

You can also get the codec free by downloading the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack:

http://www.codecpackguide.com/klmcodec.htm

or at:

http://www.free-codecs.com/Motion_JPEG_Codec_download.htm

Hi Nigel,
I downloaded the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. Apparently conversion to the required format is not automatic; I got the same error and couldn't preview the clip. How do I then convert the clip to get it to run?
Thanks, Neil Ober

Hi Neil

You should not need to convert your videos if the only error you get is "Cannot find vids: mjpg decompressor" You only need to install a driver so that DVD PixPlay can preview them (the codec packs just install multimedia drivers).

At any rate, you should be able to burn the video even if you do not have the driver (it is only used by DVD PixPlay for preview).

Hi Nigel, Me again. I did burn just the videos and they worked but I would like to preview them when I assemble the show. Since all I see is the icon, it is easy to get them out of order; I did that. Also, I want the music to stop when the video comes on so I can hear the narration. On the one I just did the music stayed on overiding the audio. How do I mute the music for those videos?
Thanks, Neil

Hi Neil

DVD PixPlay will only preview videos if you have a codec (driver) installed for that video type. Most are already included with Windows, but unfortunately not one for MJPEG videos.

Try downloading and installing one of the codec packs again to get it.

Presently DVD PixPlay can only use the sound track of the videos in a slideshow if there are no images except after the final video. So to hear the video soundtrack you will need to do as follows:
i. Select Edit>Other>Move Videos to Start
ii. Select Edit>Select Background Music on the menu
iii. On the dialog that is displayed choose the option to use the video soundtrack as the source of the slideshow sound (if you are presented with the usual background music dialog, rather than a window with the title "Video Soundtrack" then there are still images or title pages that are remaining in your project).

We will address this limitation for a coming update.

Hi Lynda

It should not do any harm to install all, but otherwise just the MJPEG codec.

For previewing of video and audio files DVD PixPlay uses the Windows drivers.

If your computer crashed did you restore these drivers? Go to START>MY COMPUTER (RIGHT CLICK AND SELECT PROPERTIES)>HARDWARE>DEVICE MANAGER>SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLER(RIGHT CLICK ON THE PLUS SIGN) and check for any missing drivers.

Hi Lynda

Jim is correct, for previewing of videos (and background audio) DVD PixPlay relies on the Windows multimedia drivers. Digital camera videos are often in MJPEG format, which WIndows does not have a driver for. So if you reinstalled Windows you will need to reinstall the driver.

If installing a particular driver does not resolve the problem, then you should try a different driver.
