It appears that one of my competitors has stolen my email list. He has managed to capture my entire list. I only send mail out individually and not using CC or BCC mode. How can this be prevented in the future?!?!

You may need to look closer to home. I can't fathom that they could have skimmed it from a send.

What makes you think they got your list?
How do you think they got your list?
Does anyone else have internal access to the DB?

There aren't a lot of options. Give me some clues and I bet I could figure it out tho.

Hi

MLK runs from your own system, that means the database exists nowhere else but your own computer. Thus - assuming you have a firewall (XP has one built in) - it is very, very unlikely that someone could access the data on your computer via the Internet.

It might be hard to believe but apparently there is hacker software that can capture the email addresses from a mass mailing. I have previously set up dummy email addresses and added them to my mail outs. They all now receive the mailout from my competitor.

ps. I am behind the windows firewall

It is more likely that something else is going on. Even if someone had your IP (on each e-mail anyways) and the port etc, it would be difficult to sniff the outgoing addresses. If you want to add me to your mailing list and send one to me in your next send, I will look over the e-mail I get to see if there is anything that I could use to get the info.

You can also set up a dummy address and NOT add it to your list. See if that one gets their mail too. If so, then they have probably spammed you specifically.

Hi

I have to agree with Justus. We've been retailing email software for a long time and have never heard of instance where someone syphoned a list off somebody's PC (I have only heard of a situation where the ISP was exposing the BCC list and recipients were able to see other recipients <- not one of our customers ).
