My DVD burning program (DVD PixPlay) wants video in either .avi or .mpeg format. My Canon camera produces an .mpg format that is not recognized by the software. When I convert to .avi, I lose the sound. Is there a solution?

Hi Jim

In what way is your MPEG incomatible with DVD PixPlay? Do you get an error message? Have you tried clicking the Test button in the Burn Slideshow Wizard?

What method/software are you using to convert the MPEG to AVI?

When I try to add a video file to a DVD slide show, I get the warning that the file "is not a compatible video format". Therefore I can't use the Test button, because I can't even load the file. I tried both Media Covert and Zamzar to convert my *.mpg files to *.avi. Zamzar converted, but with no sound, and Media Convert created a blank conversion.

Hmmm, it sounds like the MPEGs from the Canon may be non-standard. You might want to send us one for testing.

If it is too big for email you can use www.dropload.com

Hi Jim

Thanks for the file.

Here's the problem. They are not MPEG's, they are actually Motion JPEG, so they should have the extension, .AVI.

If you rename them to that extension then DVD PixPlay will allow you to add them to your project.

Also, in testing the file you sent in various media players I was unable to access any audio track.

Thanks, Nigel. I renamed my .mpg video files with the .avi extension and got sound, but no video. I then downloaded and installed Morgan Multimedia M-jpeg codec, and everything seemed to work then. Previously I had renamed the .avi files to .mpg and that was the only way I could view them. I was missing the required codec installation. -Jim Archibald

For others with the same problem, here's what I learned to fix:

When you try to play some AVI video files, if you get the error "vids:mjpg decompressor missing". You will need to download an MJpeg codec. Three popular ones can be obtained from:
www.mainconcept.com
www.morgan-multimedia.com <-the one I used
www.pegasusimaging.com
