Nigel, I've looked but can't find any way to stop MLK checking for new mail at startup.
Here's my problem, when my Outlook 2000 starts, it's retrieving email for about 25 accounts. If there are no timeout issues as it connects to various mail servers, it finishes it ~45 seconds.
If there are timeouts while retrieving mail, it can take a few minutes to finish. When this happens, MLK [it appears] 'times out' and presents an error message popup (X An error was encountered connecting to Outlook: Server execution failed, ProgID: "Outlook.Application"). In order to continue I have to respond to the popup. No problem if I'm here but if I'm traveling I suspect that MLK will not run until I respond.
Once I do that, everything is 'back to normal', Outlook is up and running now and MLK will now connect successfully and check for new mail.
I've checked Outlook to see it there's any way to stop it from checking at startup but I can't find any options that might do that. I did turn off Tools, Options, Mail Delivery, Control when Outlook sends and receives your messages: "Send messages immediately when connected" but it still does connect when it starts.
I have Outlook first in my Startup Folder and MLK last (#6) but I don't know if that arrangement actually has any affect on the startup sequence.
I'm checking out this Startup Delayer, sounds like it might do what I need, will report back.

Posted - May 19 2009 : 06:34:43 This is an update to my original post. I've used the Startup Delayer utility to stagger/time the various programs that do startup. It's an easy utility to use and I'd recommend it to anyone wishing to control the startup process.
While using and testing the utility, I discovered the reason that Outlook was taking so long to start and it wasn't the fact it checks 25+ email addresses at start. The culprit was ShadowProtect and there was an EventID: 7002 in the System Event Log (The ShadowProtect Service service hung on starting). Googling that led me to their site and a note there had been problems and a 'repair' should be initiated to fix the problem. That didn't work so I removed the software.
There is still an occasional lag for Outlook to open completely and I'm not sure why so continue to use the Startup Delayer utility to wait 5 minutes to start MLK. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2000 and patched it and repaired it but something's still not quite right...oh well.
Nigel, thanks for considering changes in the next release.

Posted - May 18 2009 : 01:00:59 Hi Jim
There's not a way within MLK to disable the automatic checking if you still want it to check automatically every x minutes.
I think the solution here would be to have an option to ignore these transient Outlook errors.
I'll add that for the next release.
