I'm attempting to migrate MLK data from old PC running XP and MLK ver. 8.11 to new PC running Vista and MLK version 8.51 (Unregistered-waiting for reg key).

Is this even possible? I tried a couple of different things, but it looks like there are files needed in different directories, and I don't see what those are, so the data is all mixed up.

What is the best way to do this?

OK, all DBs have been successfully and accurately imported, except...

Make sure to tell people with multiple DBs to check the box to "Use different settings for each database." It looks like the new version it unchecked that option when I installed it. So, that's why the automatic messages weren't showing up for the individual DBs.

Thanks again for your help.

Don't use a back up file. It's a last resort and you lose a lot of meta data when importing from backup (such as history).

-- Automatic Message Sending files are not listed in Options/Automatic Emails/Automatic Message Responding

Open up RespondingRules.ddt and correct the listed paths. I will make it do this automatically for v8.52

-- Backup locations imported with old file locations

Update them in options.

-- Recent Mailing Lists dropdown only lists current DB (I have 6)

If you have six databases, you need to copy them all across to the new computer using the migration steps i listed above for each database. Of course you can't put all the database in the same folder, so use a similar folder structure as on your old computer, e.g.

In C:\Users\Me\Local Settings\Application Data\Xequte\MailList King\

Main DB in \DB\
DB_2 in \Another DB\

etc.

Thanks, Nigel.

Everything imported OK, except:

-- Automatic Message Sending files are not listed in Options/Automatic Emails/Automatic Message Responding
-- Backup locations imported with old file locations
-- Recent Mailing Lists dropdown only lists current DB (I have 6)

I tried creating a new DB for the other DBs I imported from the old computer, but MLK said directory name already in use.

I tried "import from file," but the directory with the file in it it not displayed by Vista in the file tree--AppData\Local\Xequte... (I also tried opening MLK as adminstrator).

It looks like it will create a DB from the Backup File. Does that mean it overwrites the files with the same directory names in AppData\Local... ? I'm confused. Are there now 2 versions of the same DB?

Hi Boyd

Yes, it is possible, but the folders will change between Windows versions.

To move your database and settings to a new computer:

1. Run MailList King on the old machine and click Ctrl+Shift+I. This will display the two important folders for MailList King (configuration and database).

2. Install MailList King on your new computer, run it and click Ctrl+Shift+I. This will show you where MailList King is saving your configuration and database on the new computer

3. Close MailList King

4. Copy your all of the files in your settings folder from Step 1 to the settings folder on the new computer from Step 2

5. Do the same for your database files

Now run MLK on the new machine and check everything is working as expected.
