I have 20 different mailing lists. I'd like to know if MLK uses the same return address for all mailing lists? Or can I use have a different address for each group?

Sorry that is a DOS feature, you should use:

START "C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"c:\! PartywiththePros" /NEW
START "C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"c:\! Pac IT Pros Lists" /NEW
START "C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\! Douggg Lists" /NEW

Below is the content of my batch file. Can you help me figure out why only the MLK on the first line will open and the batch file hangs? (No mater which one is first only the instance on the first line runs and the batch file hangs.)

Each one runs fine from its short cut. (I did a copy/past into the bacth file.

Could it be the spaces?

"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"c:\! PartywiththePros" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"c:\! Pac IT Pros Lists" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\! Douggg Lists" /NEW

Excellent analogy and explanation could have not been more clear.

And even if I didn’t understand it, the following all I really needed.

"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyB" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC" /NEW

ADVANCED WARNING

If you have a lot of databases you could even use a batch file to start them at once:

1. Open Windows Notepad

2. Type:

"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyB" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC" /NEW

3. Save it to your desktop as "Start_All_MLK.bat"

(You may need to check that Windows has correctly given it the .bat extension rather than .txt)

Hmmm, I think what we need here is an analogy so it is much easier to conceptualize. I'm not very good at analogies so bear with me ;-)

We'll start with the situation for 90% of MLK users: One MLK running and one database.

Let's imagine that "MLKing" is the name of our staff (we have only one staff) and he sits in the back room. We have one customer called "CompanyA" (= a mailing list database). Whenever I need to do CompanyA's email management I call out to our staff member "MLKing" and he comes out of the back room and does the CompanyA work (= MLK running the default database).

Later we get another customer, "CompanyB" (= a second mailing list database) so now when I call MLKing I say "MLKing do CompanyA" or "MLKing do CompanyB" (which equates to your running MLK and loading different databases - either using File>Open DB or passing the /DB parameter).

Now the problem with this situation is that our worker "MLKing" can only do one company's work at a time. So if he is busy with CompanyA, then CompanyB's stuff is being ignored.

So we have another trick up our sleeve, "NEW". When we say "MLKING NEW" our staff clones himself and sends out his clone. Every time we say NEW we get another clone. If we forget to say NEW then one of the existing staff will stop what he is doing and come and see what we want.

For each staff we can tell them what company (= database) to work on and as long as no two staff are trying to work for the same company (= two copies of MLK accessing the same database) everything will go swimmingly.

For convenience we can call out the staff name and the company they should work on, "I need a NEW MLKING clone to work on COMPANYC!" (which would equate to running MLK as "C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC" /NEW)

Sorry if that got a bit simplistic at times, but I wanted to be sure that I cover it as best I can for everyone that will may be reading.

So to answer your questions:

1. In your situation put /NEW on all the shortcuts

If you use NEW you will get a new instance of MLK (= another MLK icon in the task bar), if you don't, one of the copies of MLK already in the task bar will come to the front.

Basically, MLK has a feature (like many windows programs) so that if you run it, and then later try to run it again it does a little check that goes "Oh you want to run MailList King? But it is already running! I'll just get you the MailList King that is already running so we don't clutter your task bar, OK"

When you use "/NEW" it skips that check.

(So you would check yourself that you don't have two copies of MLK trying to work on the same database).

2. It doesn't matter if /NEW is before or after /DB: Aesthetically I prefer /NEW at the end

3. You asked, "What if B is started first? with the /NEW and then A is run without the /NEW"?

I think you're overthinking this one ;-) You can run it as many times as you like, and in any order that you like. Just think of each icon of MLKing in your Windows task bar as a staff/worker. Each worker is doing the email management of one of your customers. So if you have three customers, you want three MLKing icons. When you click each of the icons, you want the database to be different.

If you accidentally close one of the MLKing "workers" just start it up again and open the correct database for that worker.

OK, I thought I had it but it's not workig for me. Do you have insturction from start to finish how to do this? (There are pieces here and there, but nothing from start to finish.)

Here's what I've done.

1 - I created DBs for CompayA and CompanyB, each in thier own directory.

2 - I checked "Use a different configuration for each mailing list database"

3 - I added the /new
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /NEW
Question: In your directions you state run once.

If you want MLK to be able to automatically check and process the entries for each database simultaneously then you will need to run once instance of MLK for each database.
Does this mean do this once? (As in a command line switch make a one time change to MLK? Or once any time a second instance of MLK is starts?

Can you clarify?

4 - The last step is adding a short cut to CompanyA and CompanyB.
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\My_DB_Directory"
In may case it would be
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA"
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyB"
and if I had additional companies it would be....
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC"
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyD"

Question: Should each one of these shortcuts include a /NEW?
If so where?
Would all 4 need /NEW? (That way they can be started in any order.)

Is it
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA" /NEW or
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /NEW /DB:"C:\CompanyA"

And would it be
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyB" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC" /NEW

or
And would it be
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyA"
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyB" /NEW
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\CompanyC" /NEW

What if B is started first? with the /NEW and then A is run without the /NEW

Please clarify,

Douggg

Got it. Thanks

Hi Douggg

/NEW is the parameter that forces MailList King to start a new instance of the program (if you run MLK without /NEW it will just activate the already running copy, whereas when you run /NEW you will get two copies, run again you get three, etc).

If you have two copies of MailList King run (i.e. two MLK icons in the Windows task bar) then each instance can have a different database open with different settings (and processing at the same time).

Can you explain what the /new does? (Can't find it in the help doc.)
In the target field, after the path to MLK type "/NEW" (without the quotes) e.g. "C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /NEW

What's not clear to me are both DB/companies running/processing at the same time? Or is only one running at a time?

I just found this which answered another one of my questions.

Q. MailList King always defaults to my last opened database. How can I specify the database that it should start up with?

A. You need to call it with the /DB: parameter specifying the directory of the database to open. For example (include the quotes!):
"C:\Program Files\MailList King\MLKing.exe" /DB:"C:\My_DB_Directory"

You can also make copies of the MailList King shortcut on your Desktop specifying the database paths as above, so you can easily open your various databases with a single click.

Hi Doug

You only need to install it once, then you create databases in different folders and use the option to tie the settings to the database.

The FAQ describes it in more detail:

Could you offer a little clarification.

I want to manage groups of lists for two different unrealted companies. Do I install MLK in twice specifying two different install/data directories?

Of do I install MLK once, and then create a separate data directory for the other company?

Hi Douggg

Please note that you need to use a special shortcut to start a second instance of MLK:

I run two instances on the same machine. No problem for MLK. Actually, I've run three instances without any problems.

Thanks. Are you running two seperate instances on the same computer? Or two computers?

Can you both instances of MLK be running at the same time?

I was thinking loading a VM of XP and running one config of MLK on the host and the other on the guest OS. If I can run both configurations of MLK on XP problem solved.

Thanks

Hi Douggg

If I can add my 2 cents worth here. I had a similar issue - I was running mailing lists for two different clients (each with two or more lists).

The way I solved the problem was to run two copies of MLK as seperate instances, each with its own properties. In other words, each instance had a different reply address and personna.

Both copies were able to access Outlook without errors.

Hope this helps.

Hi Douggg

Assuming all the groups are of the same mailing list database then they must all have the same reply address, with one exception, you can specify the custom address %group%@douggg.com, i.e. so that the %group% is replace with the current group name.
