Posted - Jun 11 2009 : 19:53:39 Hi Nigel and Company !! In retreiving files that I had lost some returned as dpg files. They are now in my project in progress. I did a trial burn last night and they end up on the DVD.
How do I convert these .dpg files to .jpeg files so other programs will recognize them as picture files ?
Regards, Dennis

Posted - Jun 25 2009 : 06:01:26 Hi Nigel, Thank you for the peace of mind. I like to keep files neat; but I will leave the work folder alone.
There is certainly a great deal of interest in this topic with 173 readers. So, at least, I am not the onely one concerned.
Your final response will help many.
Thanks and have a great week-end !!

Posted - Jun 25 2009 : 01:12:24 Hi Dennis
There is nothing unusual in the way you describe your work folder as every image with text will have three files associated with it (the image, the dpg file describing the text and clip art you have added to the file and a preview). I wouldn't overly concern yourself with the files in that folder as PixPlay has them there for a reason.
You can use the Clean Up function under View > Options, Folders to remove some of the optional files there (PixPlay will then recreate them as needed).
You should not delete the files yourself unless you are sure you know what you are doing.
Any file that is created when you do File > Burn Slideshow, PC format is absolutely required for the slideshow.

Posted - Jun 23 2009 : 07:19:10 1 additional. When I have tried to tidy this file and then open up Project I then am in trouble getting all these Huge red question marks for pictures saying files cannot be found or have been moved. Which one is the critical file to keep of the 4 or 5 of each picture that are in the Project Folder ?
Once again Thanks,
Dennis of Canada

Posted - Jun 23 2009 : 07:13:24 Hi Nigel and other Pix Players, Thank you Nigel for the detailed explanation. The neatness of your folder is not what is happening for me.
I start by adding the jpg inages to my Pix Play Project. Click Save as and have it saved in same folder as my jpgs. If I do any editing I click save.
But, Wow !! when I go back into my Progaam folder I am seeing:
1.Winter Wonderland1.jpg but the editing has been lost on the jpg.
2.Winter Wonderland1.dpg with no picture and just the pix play red symbol.
3.Winter Wonderland1_Preview.jpg is there with the picture and editing. This is now a duplicate of 1. This is now a duplicate of 1.
4. Winter Wonderland2_Preview.jpg is there with the picture and editing. This is now a duplicate of 1.
Sometimes I have Winter Wonderland2_Preview [2].jpg and Winter Wonderland2_Preview[3].jpg
It just gets wild and out of control.
So now my neat work folder has gone from a nice tidy jpg folder of 1 file for each picture to 4 or 5,6 files of each picture. Very confusing and when dealing with an original 300 jpgs. and not I have 900 files in my work folder it is over whelming and crazy, bizare.
Why is this happening Nigel ?? I know I must doing something wrong or extra that is not needed.
FYI, I did do the Burn to Disk, PC Computer mode to change them back to jpg from .dpg as you suggested for a transferrable .jpg file to other programs. But, I am getting so many extra ??
I need some guidance here please, especially after seeing your tidy folder.
Thanking you in advance, Dennis

Posted - Jun 17 2009 : 19:42:18 Hi Dennis
Sorry by using bold, i didn't mean that i was shouting, only emphasizing. I certainly was not angry when typing that .
I think i misunderstood your requirement for "backup". What you mean is that you want the project backed up in a format that is independent of DVD PixPlay, i.e. all DPG files being converted as JPEG.
DPG files will always show us as "Unknown file type" when launched from Explorer as they are a private PixPlay format type. Also, images with text added will not show that text when viewed in Windows Explorer, however once you open the project in PixPlay again you will see that none of your editing has been lost (emphasis only, not shouting ).
PixPlay does things that way so that you can continue to re-edit the title pages and text on your images. PixPlay holds off converting them to a universal format until you need to use them elsewhere, i.e. once you select File > Burn Slideshow they are output as JPEG.
These are the steps to output in PC format:
In the last frame you can see that the title page which shows in your project folder as "Title Page 4.dpg" has been converted to jpeg, "Title Page 4.jpg"

Posted - Jun 17 2009 : 19:19:28 Hi Nigel,
1. Select File > Burn Slideshow 2. Choose the PC format, click Next 3. Click "PC Slideshow Options" and choose the output size. OK. Next 4. Choose to save to a hard disk folder and click Finish
This will create a folder with all of the files in your slideshow, including the DPG files converted to JPEG.
These are the steps I said I could not follow. Doesn't save to a hard disk mean the same as burn slide show and you are shouting back with an angry response.

Posted - Jun 17 2009 : 09:02:03 Also my title pages that I created are gone. Always clicked on save after creating each one.
Just forget about all this; it should work better on next project. And for now I will juat do 5 or 6 photos and make up some title pages and create a folder and keep clicking save.
And will check to see they are there.
I just did this massive project without enough practice at Pix play.
Not necessary to respond. I know I have maxed out on problems and questions for now.
Chill, Dennis

Posted - Jun 17 2009 : 07:04:12 Well I will tell you why I was nervous. As I said Many of the files were dpg.
So, I finshed burning all my DVD copes last night after only minising the project for the last 2 weeks. Did one final save. Then closed program.
Went back in to see it all the dpg files are ones I edited and they have the pixplay symbol instead of a picture. Click on any of them and they cannot be opened " not a recognized file type"
All the jpegs that show up as pictures have none of the editing saved and all the pictures have jumped out of order from the slide show.
I was worried something like this would occur and it did.
It I had to burn another DVD from this file : Impossible without another huge amout of work.
No need to shout with bold or capital letters please.
Of the 300 plus pictures that were theremaybe 10 are left and show up when the file is opened and have the editing. They are files that read and they say PE034_Preview.jpg.

Posted - Jun 16 2009 : 03:57:19 Hi Dennis
I don't understand why you are nervous, do you mean that your hard drive might crash and you would lose your project.
All you need to do is save occasionally (File > Save) and make a back up of your project folder ("DVD PixPlay Projects" in "My Documents").
You don't use File > Burn Slideshow to back up your project.

Posted - Jun 15 2009 : 19:14:49 Hi Nigel, I am very nervous to lose this project. So, I am going to just minus it down to bottom tool bar until I put in about 20 more hours and burn 15 copies for DVD only.
But, I want to do what you are trying to tell me. I just wish I could pick up the phone and call you.
You say: 1. Select File > Burn Slideshow
The only options under file are: Burn slideshow to disk. Burn Multiple Slideshows to disk. Burn single video.
So, if I choose: Burn slideshow to disk. And follow the steps never do I come to an option: 4. Choose to save to a hard disk folder and click Finish ???
My largest picture is 371 kb. And I am working with 327 images adding about 4 words of text to each picture.
So, still nervous.

It does not affect the files themselves in your project, as they need to stay in DPG format to allow you to change your slideshow output size, edit text and clip art, etc.

Posted - Jun 14 2009 : 19:39:16 Hi Nigel, Can you please be more specific and explain with more details.
I cannot quite get it. I presuume you mean File, Burn Slide show to Disk And then select PC Format(For Computers).
But how is that going to change the files in my working project back to jpegs if I am outputting the burn to a slide show disk.
How will that convert my working project .dgp files ? Because I am sending out for burn what I want changed ?

If you output your project in PC format (File > Burn Slideshow Disk) they will be converted to JPEG.
