We have also used our experience to develop a standard image uploading plug-in which delivers a cost-effective solution for companies looking to offer image uploading software to their user base.  The plug-in works with an image viewer (such as MegaView or EZ-Pix) to allow images to be uploaded via an HTTP protocol. The API used by the plug-in is highly customizable and supports upload, purchase and sharing operations. Implementation on the server side is relatively simple (a web developer can generally add an interface to support the client/server communication in less than a week).
