Dear Xequte Software User,

Long-time readers amongst you will remember the road trip I took around the USA in 2012 in order to forestall my mid-life crisis. A friend and I landed in Houston and then wound our way up to Detroit covering some 10,000km (6,000 miles) in a month. Now it is time for Part Deux, though on this occasion I will be in the company of my family, so there will be much more Disney and Universal Studios and much fewer tanks and car museums. The distances will be shorter this time too, as we will spend a week soaking up the culture in Los Angeles and finally end up in Las Vegas, though there will be a major dogleg up the Californian coast to visit Hearst Castle, Yosemite National Park and San Francisco, which (along with San Antonio) is one of my favorite American cities. I actually lived there for a short-time back in the heady dot com days, when it did not seem absurd to fly someone half way around the world to write a little code, but I was working so hard last time that I never got to see anything, this time I’ll be sure to visit Alcatraz and ride a cable car.

At our final destination of Las Vegas we will be reuniting with old friends from the USA, UK and Canada who lived on the same Japanese Island as us in the early nineties, some of whom we haven’t seen in twenty years. Yikes, time sure does fly.

Now if I can just remind myself to drive on the right side of the road, I’m sure we’ll have a great vacation.

Regards

» Program Tips

- MailList King: Auto optimization of Embedded Images

These days with megapixel cameras all the rage it is all easy too easy to embed a huge image into your message and then wonder why it takes so long to send. We have addressed this in v13 with a button on our new imaging toolbar that will “Compress” your images. This process will automatically reduce images to the size they are shown in your message so that they are never any weightier than they need to be. You can do this just prior to sending, but it is probably more convenient to do this automatically.

You will find this and other image optimization setting under File > Options, Sending, Other Sending Options.

- Text Lightning: Automatic Salutation

I must be one of the most avid users of Text Lightning, because, as much as I love my customers, I get asked the same questions a lot (“How much does it cost to upgrade…” “Where can I download the latest version…”) and if I had to type my queerly-spelt web address one hundred times a day I’d go barking mad. But perhaps one of my favorite features is the most prosaic, Automatic Salutation. If I’m replying to someone whose email address is “John Smith <jc@gmail.com>" then naturally the first two words I am are going to type are “Hi John.” Seems obvious, but Microsoft seems to have missed it. Hopefully soon they will realize their massive oversight and a billion keystrokes will be saved each year worldwide, in the meantime you have Text Lightning!

- DVD PixPlay: Outputting your slideshow to PDF

Why would anyone possibly want to save a slideshow with all its gorgeous transition and pan zoom effects and engaging musical accompaniment as an image only document? I have no idea. But the features was requested by a lot of customers so we added it. We probably should have asked them why they needed it and this tip would have been much more compelling, but I guess that ship has already sailed. Possibly they want to email a copy of the images they have used to their mother-in-law for approval? Your guess is as good as mine.

Anyway the feature is there for you when you need it. Just select File > Burn Slideshow and choose the Adobe Acrobat option, and then save it to a file. You can also output your slideshow as just images. Though only heaven knows why anyone would want to do that.
