Narrative Poetry
What is narrative poetry? Although it can be hard to distinguish between these and other types of poetry, the core of this type is the story.
Metered verse is a common format for narrative poems. It allows characters and the narrator to clearly communicate throughout the poem. The Raven written by Edgar Allan Poe, and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge are just two of the most well-known narrative poems in the world. Screenplays and scripts
Television and film narrations have additional complexities. Screen direction (or action) is written into the script to guide actors in the right behaviors and cues. However, this information is not available to the viewer. Screenplays and scripts cannot be reliant on descriptive language to tell a story.
Folk Stories
Folk stories are one of the oldest forms of storytelling. Even though the story is entirely fictional, it is built around cultural identity and values that can then be passed to every generation. These stories often contain oral elements such as jokes, songs and common expressions.
Myths and Fables
Prose narratives include myths and folktales. Myths tend to be more imaginative and are often used to explain the mysteries surrounding life and nature. Fables on the other hand have a moral message, and often use animals that behave human-like to communicate this message.
Novels
Novels are the most familiar form of narrative. These are longer works written in prose and published under the title of books. It is believed that the first novel was written in the 11th Century. There is much debate about the length of this type of narrative. Novellas fall somewhere between novels or short stories.
