The airline does not charge change fees for short-haul international and domestic flights and some long-haul flights, except for basic economy class.
You cannot change or get a refund on basic economy tickets. It includes holding a previous (domestic) flight on the same day to the same destination.
American Airlines 24-Hour Flight Change Policy
You can change your flight for free within 24 hours of booking. This regardless of your ticket, your travel class, your destination and your itinerary types.
Make sure the flight you are rescheduling operates between the same destinations as the original one.
Per American Airlines' flight change policy, you must pay the fare difference between the original airline ticket and the new airline ticket.
American Airlines Same Day Flight Change and Standby Policies
American Airlines allows passengers to make same-day flight changes on domestic flights.
Same-day flight change is permitted through the AA website, by calling reservations or at the airport.

AirPass tickets
Request same-day standby on the official website or at the airport's self-service kiosks.
The standby policy applies to travel between and within the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, or Canada aboard American and/or American Eagle.
