I was in process of ‘transferring’ some jpeg files from their normal home in ‘My Pictures’ when I seem to have inadvertently dropped them on to the desk top where icons now appear described as ‘copy 3 of img_***.jpg’ etc. Some are copy 3, some copy 4 and some ‘copy of copy 2’ There are about 36 such files.

I have several times tried to delete the icons from the desk top, both by dragging to the recycle bin and by highlighting and pressing delete. This appears to work but when I switch the computer off and on the 36 files are re-generated and re-appear on the desk top.

Right clicking on the icons and selecting properties gives the location as ‘documents and settings/my name/desktop.

My operating system is Windows XP, DVD PixPlay V.4.05

Help would be appreciated

Thanks for that - meantime I seem to have blundered into a solution as follows:

In C drive, documents and settings / my name / desktop all the offending files were listed along with a few other correct entries. Deleting the jpg files from there was successful and they do not recur when I reboot.

Happy New Year

Simply do a reboot, and after the initial screen, press F8 key (usually is this key). Keep it pressed until you see a prompt asking what do you want to do. usually there are three possibilities (I hope to remember correctly):

1) safe mode
2) safe mode with network
3) dos mode or something similar

You should select "safe mode". This loads windows with only very few essential services, and nothing else.

Now delete the files and than reboot your computer as you normally would.

Thanks for reply, tried this but doesn't get rid of the offending items since properties show under 'type of file' that they are 'Smart Pix Images' -- extra unwanted copies of the actual file, not just a shortcut.
Any other suggestions?
